The story of the Lutecia hotel starts in 1969, the year it opened with a “bold concept” for its time. In 2006 the hotel changed hands and concept – it was now a “smart design”. It's based in the vintage suburb of Areeiro, 200 meters away from the tube station that will get you to the city centre. Most of the 175 rooms come with a promise of panoramic city view.
The mood? Proving simple is best. 
Budget range? Pick the right check-in date, and it's an absolute steal.

The front of the building is an instant eye-catcher, combining its traditional architecture with a modern blue. The Zenit is a four-star hotel with eight floors close to the newly renewed, and very busy, Avenidas Novas (that are full of new restaurants and stores). The bedrooms are simple but modern, the restaurant has an “internationally modern” menu and the bar serves wine and cocktails until late in the evening.
 
The mood? Sleek and sophisticated. 
Budget range? You won't find much better for much cheaper.

One of the oldest convents in Lisbon, right in the heart of Alfama and transformed into a hotel. Although the 43 rooms have a minimalist decoration, the halls are full of works of art by reputable artists (Júlio Pomar, Paulo Rêgo and Sebastião Salgado are some of them) and the lobby is adorned with Portuguese tiles by the artist duo Pedrita. The almost Grecian patio has a terrace and a pool, and some rooms offer panoramic city views. 
 
The mood? Stylish and artistic. 
Budget range? On the slightly higher end of cheap.
