These are the best things to do in Miami this weekend

Welcome to the rainy season in Miami. After a stalled start, the daily thunderstorms arrived with a vengeance this week. Luckily, the flood warnings are set to expire just in time for the weekend—and a good thing, since there are plenty of fun ways to break outside and explore Miami come Friday. On deck, we've got festive Pride events, lots of live music and don't forget Father's Day on Sunday. An immersive exhibit tracing the illustrious life and career of Leo Messi, a prehistoric garden installation and a slew of adorable farmers markets round out the festivities. Ready to have some fun in the 305? Here are the best things to do in Miami this weekend.  RECOMMENDED: Things to do in Miami

The best Cuban sandwiches in Miami

The best Cuban sandwiches in Miami

Look, we’re not saying Tampa didn’t invent the Cuban sandwich. We’re not even saying that Tampa’s addition of salami is an abomination to the sandwich gods. But what we will insist is that Tampa—a.k.a, the capital of southern Alabama—misses an integral building block of a pressed Cuban: the Miami culture that made it a sandwich icon. That plays out every single day. It’s finding a Cubano at a cafe still open at dawn on Calle Ocho. It’s ordering one from a cafecito window on South Beach. It’s brushing crumbs off your person after devouring a Cuban scored at a drive-through in Hialeah. The Cuban sandwich is Miami culture, buttered and pressed. It’s a sandwich we love, and here, at these spots below, are the absolute best of them.

The best July events in Miami

Summer is getting intense: It's July and, believe it or not, this is not Miami's hottest month. (August gets that distinction). Weather aside, July in Miami actually has so much to offer, including trusty backup plans for a rainy day and plenty of fun things to do with kids while they're out of school. We don’t see many tourists this time of year except for the Fourth of July, which means a more relaxed pace, a break from the heavy traffic and July events more catered to the locals. Below, find our regularly updated guide, in no particular order, to the best July events in Miami to add to your calendar. RECOMMENDED: The best things to do in Miami

The best swimming pools in Miami for a break from the beach

People come to Miami for the amazing beaches, but there are so many pristine pools with gorgeous views to discover here, too. Cubatón Sandwich Shop

Cubatón Sandwich Shop

After kicking off his culinary career in New York, David Reidenberg transplanted to Miami during the pandemic and eventually created Cubatón, a worthy homage to this town’s most famous dish. The tiny shopfront a block off Española Way serves a tight menu of handhelds, from “The Classic” Cubano to pan con lechón and medianoche, all made with pork marinated in citrus-garlic mojo and slow-roasted for over 14 hours. Of course, the bubbly, 30-year-old Reidenberg has included a couple of his own new-wave creations, like a Cuban made with hot honey (delicious) and even a veggie option. On the sweet side, pair the pan con timba (a pressed guava and queso sandwich like abuela would make) with an iced café bonbón, a double shot of Cuban-style espresso served over ice and topped with a homemade tres leches blend and a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk. The batidos (milkshakes) are seasonal, like this summer's pineapple and coconut flavor. The shop itself is sunny and teal-hued in keeping with the Deco neighborhood. There’s a smattering of sidewalk seats and a small bench inside, so don’t plan to linger long. Luckily, all of the items pair perfectly with a day at the beach, just a short walk away.

Museum of Ice Cream to return to Miami with a permanent home in Downtown

Museum of Ice Cream to return to Miami with a permanent home in Downtown

It feels like a lifetime ago—2017—when the Museum of Ice Cream first melted into the collective consciousness of Miami. Back then, our writer described it as “a playground for the social media generation.” Words like “immersive” and “experiential” were only just beginning to trickle into the mainstream, and the concept of a “pop-up” in Miami didn’t instantly trigger pandemic PTSD, with maybe a twinge of nostalgia. Now, the sold-out and extended experience that first took up residence in the Faena District (following massively successful locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco) will return to Miami permanently in early 2024. The new Museum of Ice Cream Miami will live in Downtown’s Miami Worldcenter at 851 NE 1st Avenue (Unit #134). Slated to debut in early 2024, it will span two floors and more than 14,000 square feet along the development’s pedestrian promenade between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Rendering: Courtesy Miami Worldcenter Designed by the MOIC in-house team, the “multi-platform, immersive experience” will also incorporate AI technology to transport guests into a pastel-hued, sprinkle-coated wonderland, “fostering human connection through the shared love of ice cream,” according to the official release.  MOIC visitors will find 10 interactive, Miami-inspired installations, among them the Cream Liner, a luxury airliner experience inspired by the ’60s and ’70s; and The Hall of Freezers, a trippy exploratory room filled with dozens of mysterious refrigerator d

South Florida is about to get absolutely drenched this week

South Florida is about to get absolutely drenched this week

Update: As of June 12, the flood watch has been extended through Thursday evening. Miami’s early summer has been suspiciously devoid of its usual afternoon rainstorms, but that’s about to change this week. The Atlantic hurricane season is officially underway and, right on schedule, weather forecasters are tracking a tropical system that could douse South Florida and much of the state with 10 or more inches of rain over the next several days. Ahead of the deluge, a flood watch has been issued for parts of South Florida through Wednesday evening, including Miam-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Conditions are expected to deteriorate around midnight tonight, when excessive rainfall could trigger flash flooding from excessive runoff, especially in low-lying, flood-prone areas. Meteorologists are predicting Southwest Florida will be hit hardest, with some areas bracing for up to 22 inches of rain. According to the National Weather Service, enhanced tropical moisture is expected to pool across South Florida through the week, resulting in prolonged periods of heavy rain. How long is it going to be raining? Though the flood watch is currently in effect through Wednesday evening, the slow-moving system is forecast to keep Miami drenched until at least Saturday. But don’t expect the rain to let up much after that. It might have gotten a stalled start, but Florida’s wet season is finally kicking into gear.  According to The Weather Channel, Miami gets about 45 inches of rain (nearl

A trailblazer in Brickell's now rampant supper club scene is about to shut its doors—but not for good. Marion's last day of service will be on June 22, according to Miami New Times. Mr. Hospitality, the Miami-based group behind Marion, El Tucán, Baoli, Queen and others, has not yet announced what will take the restaurant's place or an exact reopening date, but an official unveiling of the new concept is slated for September 2024. III Points just dropped its main 2024 festival lineup

We’re about four months ouf from the 2024 edition of III Points, Miami’s massive, late-night music festival for more underground sounds, and today the team has dropped the main lineup for the eleventh edition. Taking place at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center on October 18 and 19, III Points had already announced Justice, Toro y Moi and Jamie XX as three of its 2024 headliners earlier this year. Now, to get us even more hyped than we already were, the festival has added more than 50 new names to the bill. New highlights from the 60-plus artist lineup include British trip-hop collective Massive Attack, who have not played in the city since 2010, and English electronic music duo Disclosure. Trailblazing legends George Clinton and his Parliament-Funkadelic are also among the freshly announced headliners. Known for its eclectic lineups and boundary-pushing art and technology installations, III Points celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, standing out as a reliable festival alternative to Miami’s annual EDM bacchanal, Ultra. Unlike other festivals, III Points kicks off in the evening, running 13 hours a day and raging until 4am for two days straight. This year’s festival spans 11 stages and genres from rap, indie rock and funk to underground dance, legacy acts and driving techno. Over the next several weeks, expect even more acts to be announced, in addition to lineups for the official satellite parties, artist and brand activations and more. In the meantime, read up on the

An ideal refuge from the scorching heat and daily storms of summer in Miami, the Balloon Museum invites visitors of all ages to explore the contrast between lightness and heaviness through the medium of air. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the art, touching and feeling the various pieces exhibited. Basically, the exact opposite of the “don’t touch the art” mantra that dominates trips to more traditional museums. Our favorite pandemic pop-up finally has a permanent home

Pandemic what? It feels like lifetimes ago when we sat under the banyan tree at Lot 6 in Little River, awaiting our Parker House rolls, oysters and martinis in the warm, reassuring open air. Those were the evenings we were allowed to set aside our worries and commune with friends and loved ones over delicious food, gleefully ordering another round of Green Ghouls from the friendliest servers—even when their smiles were covered with masks. It was strange, fraught times, but Sunny’s Steakhouse was an especially bright glimmer during its tenure as a pop-up. A product of the award-winning Jaguar Sun team when that small, indoor-only space was forced to shut down, Sunny’s was an instant hit, beckoning the masses to a quiet, industrial side street to partake in perfectly done cuts of meat, beautifully dressed salads and surprisingly delicious desserts (remember that foie gras-topped mousse?). Photograph: Cleveland Jennings After a couple of successful seasons operating on the weekends—earning fervent fans and well-deserved accolades along the way—Sunny’s closed for renovations in May of 2022. And now there’s finally a reopening on the horizon. Slated to make its Little River homecoming this fall at the original Lot 6 location, Sunny’s will return with a new look, much-appreciated air conditioning and regular service throughout the week.
