This shopping haven in town is your go-to for affordable yet trendy accessories in Singapore

Shopping options in Singapore are aplenty, but none offer an experience as unique as that of Bugis Street. It’s somewhat a cross between a shopping mall and traditional pasar malam; Buzzing from day to night, the fully sheltered, partially air-conditioned shopping street houses a hodgepodge of street food, clothing, claw machines, and even nail and tattoo parlours. It's a popular haunt for youngsters chasing trends on a budget, yet also a hotspot for tourists to try local street eats and grab souvenirs all in one place. Bugis Street has also gained a rep for wallet-friendly fashion and tech accessories since the early 2000s. While this still holds true today, much has evolved over the years, especially with a recent revamp. Here are some must-visit stores within the three-storey enclave, from well-loved mainstays to the new and exciting. The 30 coolest streets in the world

The 30 coolest streets in the world

Ticking off the main tourist attractions on a city break is all well and good, but it’s only when you veer off down a side street or stumble across a leafy avenue that you really get a glimpse of a city’s true character. Streets are the heart of local life; they’re where communities come together, where new local businesses become go-to staples and where urbanites go out, hang out and have fun.  So what are the world’s coolest streets worth a stroll right now? To find the answer, we reached out to our global team of local expert editors and contributors, who each made a case for the coolest street in their city. We then narrowed down the selection to create a definitive ranking of the best avenues, thoroughfares, backstreets and boulevards on the planet. And so you have it: the coolest streets in the world’s best cities. Over the last few years, street life has gone through something of an evolution. Outdoor drinking and dining, at one point a temporary measure, has become a staple on many of the streets on our hotlist; only bolstered by green initiatives like pedestrianisation and low-traffic avenues. In other words, these streets have become much more walkable and pleasant places to spend our time. On every street on this list, there are bold, creative new ventures in food, drink, nightlife and culture: from listening bars to repurposed heritage buildings, these streets are where you’ll find a city’s most exciting cultural trends. The 50 best cities in the world in 2024

The 50 best cities in the world in 2024

What makes a city great? Some would say it’s all about buzzing neighbourhoods, affordable food and drink and a mighty selection of things to do, from art galleries and museums to live music and theatre. Others might highlight things like the happiness of its locals, access to green space and strong community vibes. We factor in all that and more in our annual survey, which asks city-dwellers around the world to tell us what it’s like to live, work and play in their hometowns right now. Thanks to the opinions and insights of locals on the ground and our global network of city experts, we’re able to create a global ranking of the world’s best cities – and the 2024 results are in. As in previous years, the basis of the ranking remains our global survey of the people who know their city best: the locals. Working with research company Potentia Insight, we surveyed thousands of city-dwellers about the quality and affordability of food, culture and nightlife in their city. We also asked locals how their city makes them feel: are they happy there? Is it a beautiful place? Is it easy to make social connections? Their thousands of responses gave us a unique insight into the reality of living in the world’s greatest cities right now. Now that international travel is forecast to bounce back to the highest levels since 2019, many travellers will be planning a city break this year – so in 2024, we added a little extra weight to a city’s global appeal. Each survey respondent was asked which

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

The 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world

It’s that time again. Every year, we ask thousands of city-dwellers to tell us the coolest spots in their cities. What are the places locals love and visitors flock to? Where are the exciting new openings across food, drink and culture? Where are people going out, hanging out and having fun? For the sixth year running, the results are in. Over 12,000 people had their say in this year’s shortlist, naming the neighbourhoods in their hometowns where everyone wants to be right now. Then, we narrowed down the selection with the insight and expertise of city editors and local experts who know their cities better than anyone else. To create and rank the final list, we considered factors including community and social ventures, access to open and green space, and thriving street life. In 2023, our neighbourhoods are more global than ever before. The rise and rise in post-pandemic digital nomadism has led to an explosion of brand-new community spaces, multi-purpose culture centres and more cafés than we can count on two hands. But while most of these neighbourhoods have experienced a transformation over recent years, they remain resolutely local at heart. Slick new developments and cool cafés might bring in new crowds, but neighbourhood stalwarts – from old pubs to family greengrocers – keep it real.  The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year are, therefore, places with big personalities. Each area’s diversity is reflected in its food, culture and festivals. Community is key: local

Sakura afternoon tea at Raffles Hotel

Sakura afternoon tea at Raffles Hotel

The romantic season of spring is washing over Raffles Hotel’s grand lobby yet again with the comeback of their highly-anticipated sakura afternoon tea, which consistently garnered great hype in earlier editions. 2024’s version retains some of the previous years’ favourites, while introducing delectable new morsels – this time inspired by the chef’s own virgin sakura experience in Japan. The savoury items include cold bites like the kanikama hosomaki roll, salmon sushi roll with avocado, and tamagoyaki with ikura and Japanese pickles, though our to pick is the beef sando with katsu bechamel – served warm, juicy, and with a touch of moreish crispiness from a panko coating. This year’s sweet treats are arguably even more of the feast for the eyes than before – as they are for the belly – with cherry blossom motifs and attractive shades of pink. Turns out, special custom moulds are used for some of the sakura-shaped motifs seen in items like the sakura tea strawberry tartlet and sakura coconut sable. These are complemented with the sakura matcha mochi profiterole – a favourite at the table – as well as the sakura raspberry roll cake and palate-cleansing sakura yuzu verrine. Adding on to that is a variety of not one, not two, but three home-made scones, each in a different flavour: original, raisin, and a less commonly-seen savoury version with bacon and chives infused in the batter. You’ll also get your choice of Mariage Frères tea, or a custom Raffles coffee blend. The sakura a

Famed cocktail bar Dragonfly opens in Singapore with ethereal stained glass decor and live music

Famed cocktail bar Dragonfly opens in Singapore with ethereal stained glass decor and live music

When we think of thematic bars in Singapore, a few distinctive places spring to mind: Atlas with its grand art deco interiors, Barbary Coast that’s decked out in floral wallpaper and chandeliers, and the seductive Here Kitty Kitty that’s fashioned after a Japanese vice den. The newest stunner joining this aesthetically-pleasing list is cocktail bar Dragonfly from Hong Kong, which has quietly flitted over to our shores in a less-frequented corner of Orchard Road. Stepping into Dragonfly is almost akin to crossing a gateway into a magical dimension. Its unique, otherworldly concept is the brainchild of Ashley Sutton – the same design mastermind behind other ornate drinking establishments like Iron Fairies and The Mixing Room – and one can definitely see the mark of his signature style here. And very much like its sister bars, Dragonfly presents that 'gram factor in every corner. Mirroring the original famed branch along Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road, Dragonfly Singapore also has that iconic gilded bar counter where a figure of a half dragonfly, half forest nymph-like creature stands in the middle, with majestic stained glass wings spread out to flank a shelf full of spirit bottles. Adding on to this dazzling display are shimmery mosaic floor tiles in hues of blue and green, along with wing-patterned glass lamps bathing the space in an ethereal blue hue. Plush interiors aside, Dragonfly Singapore’s concoctions are also set to impress, with bartender Morgan Raelin Barron at the helm

AirAsia has a ‘free seats’ promo for over 130 destinations, book for travel dates till late 2025

AirAsia has a ‘free seats’ promo for over 130 destinations, book for travel dates till late 2025

We’ve still got a couple of public holidays in Singapore for 2024 left, and if you haven’t already locked in your vacations, now’s an opportune time to do so. Low-cost airline AirAsia is bringing back their ‘free seats’ promotion, where you’ll get to fly to over 130 destinations around the region for practically free. This news comes shortly after the announcement of Emirates’ special fares, with reasonably-priced return flights from Singapore to over 80 destinations – including trips to Europe under $1,000. Well, the AirAsia flights are not 100 percent free per se – especially not in this economy, with Singapore being the world’s most expensive city in the world once again – but it’s still a sweet deal nonetheless. The catch? The ‘free’ seats are for base fares, and you’ll still have to spare some pennies for things like airport taxes, fuel surcharges, and other applicable expenses such as checked baggage. That said, these additional costs are usually in negligible amounts, and you’ll still be saving a fair bit by not having to pay for your seat on the plane. If you’re curious as to how much this would set you back, that’ll start from just $68 one-way, all-in, for locations like Bangkok, Bali, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and Kota Kinabalu – all perfect for quick weekend getaways. Looking to jet set a little further? AirAsia is also having a concurrent big sale where they’re offering discounted prices for medium-haul destinations, with Fly-Thru via Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok

On the other hand, NTU scores fifteenth globally and third in Asia, coming in right behind Peking University from China. Other public universities from Singapore, such as the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) did not make the list. You might be surprised to know that what’s deemed the best university in the world is not an ivy league college, but rather, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from the USA, which specialises mainly in Science and tech. Snagging second place is Imperial College London from the UK, followed by the University of Oxford in third place. Here are the top 10 universities in Asia for 2025: National University of Singapore (NUS) Peking University, China Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore University of Hong Kong (UKU) Tsinghua University, China Seoul National University, South Korea University of Tokyo, Japan Chinese Univer

Singapore is home to plenty of big international F&B names – some of the more recent entrants include Cote Korean Steakhouse from New York, wagyu ramen chain Mashi no Mashi from Japan, and L’antica Pizzeria da Michele, one of the oldest and most well-loved pizzerias from Naples. The latest one joining the list? SushiSamba, which combines the celebration of food with music and dance. With a slew of existing outlets in cities like London, Las Vegas, Edinburgh, Dubai, and more, this world-famous restaurant-bar is opening its first Asia-based branch right here in Singapore this July 2024. And of course, in true SushiSamba style, they’ve chosen to go big and swanky – starting by claiming their territory on the 52nd storey of Capital Tower, complete with 360-degree views of the cityscape and even its surrounding waters. Each one is distinctly different from the other, but all of them have similar nature-centred elements in their decor. While the Covent Garden branch is a garden oasis peppered with flowers, the one at Doha is tropical-themed, complete with beach club. Edinburgh’s has a tree with flaming red leaves standing majestically in the middle of the circular bar counter. Photograph: SushiSamba As for Singap

Night At Orchard returns after four-year hiatus with 10 monthly themed events held across 2024

Orchard Road is about to get a lot livelier this year with the return of Night At Orchard, a series of monthly pop-up events held along our shopping belt. Previously halted for four years due to the pandemic, the mega bazaar first made a big comeback in March 2024. Set to be held from Friday to Sunday, 3pm to 10pm, during the last week of every month of the year, Night At Orchard focuses on "creative and experiential brands", both homegrown and international. The bazaar stretches from the outdoor area in front of Wisma Atria to Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya), and typically features a whopping 50-over booths each time. Aside from food, retail, and shopping options, there may also be hands-on activities such as art workshops, accessory customisation, and fun game challenges. Previous editions also had gachapon machines and blind boxes for attendees to try their luck with. At certain times of the year, special themes might come into play – the April version was sustainability-focused, while May's upcoming one is Summer-themed, where you can probably expect tropical flavours and icy cold treats. Here's the full list of the remaining Night At Orchard events for 2024: May 31 to June 2 June 28 to 30 July 26 to 28 August 30 to September 1 September 27 to 19 October 25 to 27 November 29 to December 1 December 27 to 29  Find out more about Night At Orchard here. Singapore’s Koon Seng Road has been named one of the most beautiful streets in the world

Singapore’s Koon Seng Road has been named one of the most beautiful streets in the world

Earlier this year, the Time Out team picked Cecil Street as the coolest street in Singapore for 2024, as part of our overarching ranking of coolest streets around the world. Despite its seemingly cold and steely appearance, the oft-overlooked stretch along the business district is packed with fun – from swanky wine bars to a golf simulation centre and trendy coffee cafés. If we’re zooming in solely on aesthetic beauty, however, there are plenty of pretty streets across the city that we’d cast our radar over. And according to Condé Nast Traveler, Koon Seng Road in the Joo Chiat area takes the title as one of the most beautiful streets in the world – ranked at 46th place globally out of a total list of 71, and second in Southeast Asia. Old Town in Colmar, France, scores first place, followed by Brunngasse in Breinz, Switzerland, and Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain taking the second and third spots respectively. As for eye-pleasing streets in Asia, we have Jinli Street in Chengdu, China (#11) and Tetsugaku no Michi in Kyoto, Japan (#17) making the top 20. The latter isn’t the only place in Japan to be highlighted for its breathtaking beauty though; There’s also Sagano Bamboo Forest (#25), a highly popular tourist spot also commonly known as Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, which also happens to be located in Kyoto. Hội An in Vietnam sits just one spot above Singapore at 45th place, while Soi Romanee in Phuket, Thailand and Bukchon Hanok Village in Seoul, Korea score 52nd and 62nd res

One steakhouse from Singapore makes it to the list of world’s best steak restaurants for 2024

This one’s for the self-professed carnivores and ardent meat-lovers; While there are numerous amazing steakhouses in Singapore, the debate on which is most deserving of your calorie limit is now over, as one name has emerged as one of the best steakhouses in the world. Based on a list by Upper Cut Media House in London, Singapore’s Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse has not only come in at 38th place out of a total list of 101 – it’s also deemed as the best steak restaurant in all of Asia. In fact, only two other steakhouses in Asia have made the cut, and both happen to be from Hong Kong: Fireside which ranks 70th, and The Steakhouse, which clinches the final spot at number 101. Photograph: Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse The top three spots are spread all over other continents: Parrilla Don Julio from Argentina, Bodega El Capricho from Spain, and Margaret from Australia. Right after that comes New York’s Cote at fourth place – it’s worth noting that Singapore has its very own Cote outpost at Orchard Road, so you won’t have to travel far in order to savour their flavoursome Korean steaks. Other than the quality and selection of meat served, a couple of other judging criteria such as the interiors, wine list, and meat expertise of the service crew were used when considering the various meaty contenders. Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse is located in a preserved shophouse at Mohamed Sultan Road, a stone’s throw from the Robertson Quay area and Fort Canning MRT station. Whether you choose a seat

ICA to have new self-collection system, no appointments needed for passport or IC collection

ICA to have new self-collection system, no appointments needed for passport or IC collection

Great news for Singaporeans with erratic schedules – you will soon be able to drop by Lavender on a whim to collect your new passports and NRICs, as prior appointments will no longer be needed at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) once the new ICA Services Centre (ISC) kicks off its operations in the near future. Set to be located right next to the existing ICA building, the ISC will use a special technology called the Integrated Smart Document Management System – known as iSMART for short – which digitises various processes via biometrics for a more convenient experience. This will likely also shorten waiting times by a margin. Currently, walk-ins are strictly not allowed for passport and IC collection, unless they’re deemed “urgent cases on an exceptional basis”. The ISC is slated to open on an unspecified date in 2025. Till then, it’ll be the usual ICA appointments or post office visits if you’re looking to pick up your new legal documents – so it’s best not to keep things to the last minute if your passport expiry is looming and you’ve got a trip planned soon after. This restaurant in Singapore that Taylor Swift visited ranks in world’s most photo-worthy restaurants list

Call it the Taylor effect if you will, but modern Japanese restaurant Koma has just made it to a list of the world’s 20 most photo-worthy restaurants, at 18th place. The fancy eatery at Marina Bay Sands seems to be a new favourite of songstress Taylor Swift, who dined there not just once, but twice, during her time in Singapore for The Eras Tour earlier in 2024. And despite the presence of a private room, she chose to remain in the main dining area – presumably to soak in the restaurant’s grand decor that instantly whisks patrons right off to Kyoto.   Photograph: Koma Even walking to your seat is an experience in itself here; Leading from Koma’s entrance to the dining hall is a long passageway lined with life-sized torii gates, much like the ones at the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha. Inside the high-ceilinged space are more Japanese elements, such as a red bridge resembling what you’d see in Japan’s gardens, and a 2.5-metre bell perched overhead. 3D fixtures that resemble wagasa (Japanese umbrellas) are spread across the ceiling, while giant paper lanterns bring additional colour to the dimly-lit premises. According to UK-based company Solopress, the rankings were made in accordance with the total number of TikTok and Instagram post featuring the given eateries. Indeed, Koma is clearly one of the most unique restaurants in Singapore where you won’t be able to resist whipping your phone out for plenty a snap – regardless of Taylor Swift hype or otherwise.
