Delicious new dishes warm up winter at Time Out Market Cape Town

Delicious new dishes warm up winter at Time Out Market Cape Town

Winter may have settled into the Mother City, but that’s certainly no reason to hunker down at home. Across the 12 kitchens of the Time Out Market Cape Town, the brigade of chefs has whipped together a menu of delicious new dishes that are simply perfect for cold winter days. ‘We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone during the first winter that the Market is open,’ says Russ Meyer, General Manager of Time Out Market Cape Town. ‘Our chefs and vendors have been hard at work creating locally-loved dishes that bring the warmth of the city into an inviting space during the months that particularly call for comforting food and a lively atmosphere.’ And you’ll be hard-pressed to choose just one, so bring a crowd to try a few. At The Melting Pot, chef John van Zyl - read our profile on John over here – will be dishing up bowls of fragrant Asian prawn laksa, which brings together prawns, fish balls, rice noodles and fragrant herbs in a multi-layered curried coconut broth. Photograph: Time OutPrawn laksa at The Melting Pot It’s a dish that he debuted at the hugely successful Chefs on Tour event in May, when he prepared a multi-course meal alongside chef Paul Touissaint from Time Out Market Montreal. It was a hit then, and we’re thrilled it now features on the daily menu. Next door at Kapoochka you’ll find what is surely the most tender and tasty chicken on the planet in their incredible tandoori chicken tikka. It comes with a kick of spice – they import spices direct from India –

In The Kitchen With: Ryan Reyes

'Nigiri,' says Ryan Reyes. 'Is the godfather of all sushi.' And as the Head Chef of Sushiya at Time Out Market Cape Town, this talented chef certainly has some skin in the game. And yet, Cape Town’s culinary scene almost missed out on Reyes’ remarkable vision for what sushi could – and should – look like in the Mother City. Reyes was born and raised in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, although his family heritage links him to both Canada and Japan’s Osaka prefecture. Growing up he had the idea of being a chef, but no sense of where to start. It was only when he came to Cape Town in 2014, to see his sister join a cruise ship, that he settled in the city and tapped into the city’s community of Japanese restaurants. 'I have always really enjoyed sushi, it’s probably in my DNA or something, but if you go to Japan it’s way different to what we get anywhere else in the world,' says Reyes. 'So that was the vision I had; the vision of what if Cape Town and South Africa could be introduced to this Edo-style tradition of sushi.' Reyes cut his teeth in sushi and seafood restaurants across Cape Town, training under sushi masters from Japan, before travelling and cooking in Europe and Asia, before returning to the Mother City.  When the opportunity came to join Pete Tempelhoff’s restaurant group, and take the helm of the new ‘sushi shop’ at Time Out Market Cape Town, Reyes knew he’d found the moment to bring his vision to life. Today, working together with Tempelhoff, chef Ash

The 14 best burgers in Cape Town

The 14 best burgers in Cape Town

Despite no shortage of golden arches or promises of a whopping great meal, the best burgers in Cape Town are not to be found in your well-known global takeaway chains. In fact, steer well clear of those – this city is scattered with countless vibrant burger bars and laid-back eateries that leave ’em all for dust. South Africans love a good braai (aka barbecue) and the allure of a juicy flame-grilled patty – served on a great bun, with an inventive array of toppings – means burger restaurants have flourished across the city. Happily, the menus typically tap into South Africa’s burgeoning craft-beer scene too. So with a beer in one hand and a brew in the other, you’re all set. Not sure where to start? From the best Deep South taprooms to stylish inner-city eateries and local gems that offer no ordinary burger, local writer Richard Holmes has updated our list of the best burgers in Cape Town to ensure you won’t go wrong. The 10 best craft beer taprooms in Cape Town

The 10 best craft beer taprooms in Cape Town

It wasn’t all that long ago that beer in Cape Town was thoroughly mainstream, with your options limited to little more than mass-produced lager. But in step with the rise in artisan coffee and a taste for Neopolitan pizza came the slow but unstoppable spread of craft beers, as local beer-lovers discovered you could do so much more with hops and malted barley. Today across Cape Town’s bars and restaurants you’ll find hundreds of delicious craft beers, from dozens of local breweries, on tap and in the bottle. But nothing beats sinking a pint at the source, pulling up a barstool in one of the city’s cosy taprooms. At many the food is as good as what’s in the glass, and you’ll always find a buzzy atmosphere and a knowledgeable bartender happy to talk you through the taps on offer. Thirsty yet? The Melting Pot at Time Out Market Cape Town

The Melting Pot at Time Out Market Cape Town

John Van Zyl is a chef who likes to fly under the radar. Don’t expect TV shows, branded cookware or product endorsement deals. Rather, he just quietly goes about his business serving up some of the best food South Africa has to offer. Until recently you had to drive for an hour from Cape Town to taste Van Zyl’s cooking, and the winelands setting in the Elgin Valley is certainly a wonderful way to take a deep dive into the small plates he’s cooking up at The Melting Pot. And while his Elgin restaurant remains worth the trip for its concise menu of globally-inspired small plates, at Time Out Market Cape Town he brings a whole new take on the Melting Pot experience. Here, Van Zyl turns his focus to the Cape’s bountiful seafood while drawing plenty of inspiration from his own travels abroad. That could mean tuna sashimi with fermented black bean dressing, coconut and mint, through to beer-battered hake sliders with smoked potato purée and (of course) a best-in-class tartar sauce. In a city famous for its seafood, Van Zyl sets the bar high with his concise menu of superb small plates.   THE MELTING POT SEAFOOD MENU Linefish Sashimi R140 (Fermented black bean dressing, coconut, mint) Peruvian Mixed Seafood ceviche R145 (Butternut purĂ©e, tortilla chips) Beetroot-cured Salmon R140 (Mint & dill yoghurt dressing, dill pickled cucumber) Chargrilled Octopus R135 (Cauliflower purĂ©e, bacon shrimp XO dressing) Fried Fish Tacos R120 (Smoked potato aioli, tartar sauce, house pickles, shredde

The menu of Asian restaurants in Cape Town may be small, but if you know where to look you’ll find some real gems, with talented chefs putting their own spin on the classics. How Bao Now is a great example, with two of the city’s top chefs – Matt van den Berg and Carla Schulze – bringing authentic Cape flavours to a concise menu of Asian plates at their Woodstock outpost of How Bao Now. Fluffy bao buns are, as you might have guessed, the star of the show, and at Time Out Market Cape Town this creative duo brings a local perspective as they plate up exclusive flavour combos such as crayfish bao infused with Cape Malay flavours and a coconut and curry furikake, or wagyu sando-bao with a chilli crunch mayo, tonkatsu and pickled cucumber.   HOW BAO NOW MENU Baos Wagyu Sando (2 in a portion) R170 (Panko bao, wagyu, tonkatsu sauce, chilli-crisp kewpie) Flaming Chicken R105 (Fried thigh, XO, peanut crumb, Szechuan dressing) Fried Fish R100 (Hake, pickled red onion, Thai red curry dressing, nuac cham) Kimchi Pork R105 (Sous-vide pork belly, kimchi, miso mayo, Asian dressing) Banana Blossom (Vegetarian) R100 (Pickled red onion, Asian dressing, XO, herbs Kiddies Chicken Bao R65   Bao Special Cape Malay Crayfish R200 (Curry aioli, coconut furikake, vadouvan XO, lime)   Bites Crack Peanuts R45 Andry Edamame

Carne at Time Out Market Cape Town

Carne at Time Out Market Cape Town

Giorgio Nava is a household name in the Mother City, as beloved for his mellifluous Italian accent as his deft hand in the kitchen. A staple of the city’s restaurant scene for the past 20 years, Nava first entranced locals with his elegant Italian fare at 95 Keerom, and stylish cafĂ© experience at CaffĂ© Milano. So when he brought that Italian palate and perspective to the world of flame-grilled fare, the city sat up and took notice. Since opening in the city’s legal district in 2008, Carne has set the bar for Nava’s remarkable steak dishes served in a minimalist Italian tradition, with a field-to-table philosophy that’s focused firmly on provenance. Salt, pepper, olive oil and the finest quality free-range cuts
that’s all Nava needs to make a little Milanese magic. Nava brings a pared-down menu to the Time Out Market Cape Town, offering a perfect snapshot of just why Carne has become a stand-out in the city’s restaurant landscape for more than 15 years. If there’s a singular flavour to Cape Town, then it is surely found in the kitchens of the city’s Cape Malay community. And few chefs offer an experience as unique as Anwar Abdullatief, a pioneer in the city’s nascent Halaal fine-dining scene. At Barakat Abdullatief – together with his wife; TV star and celebrity chef Yolani Abrahams – flips Cape Malay cuisine on its head with a thoroughly contemporary take on traditional plates. MLILO at Time Out Market Cape Town

For all of the creativity in Cape Town’s restaurant landscape, a common complaint – often justified – is that indigenous African cuisines and culinary traditions are sidelined in favour of fine dining that looks to Europe, Asia and North America for inspiration. But not so at MLILO 'Fires of Africa', where chef Vusi Ndlovu brings a truly pan-African experience to the menu, interpreting the many ways that cultures across the continent have incorporated a lick of flame and kiss of smoke into their cooking. At MLILO you’ll find an elevated take on the traditional Zulu shisanyama barbecue, a taste of Senegal in the lamb didi, or the Kenyan classic nyama choma – thinly sliced beef – with a fresh kachumbari salad. It’s a brave and bold new approach to creating world-class cuisine imbued with the unmistakeable flavours of Africa.   MLILO MENU uMbhona R65 (Classic street corn grilled, inspired by the streets of Mombasa) Broccoli R65 (Charred broccoli, miso pickled peanuts,  drizzled with maafe sauce) Brochette of Dakar R110 (Baguette filled with Yassa onions, grilled chicken dusted in kan kan spice, chilli & lettuce) Pepe wings R110 (Grilled chicken wings seasoned with the flavour of pepe) Pork/Chicken Suya R110 (Grilled pork/chicken skewers marinated in homemade suya spice blend and brown butter served with plantain ketchup) Nyama Choma R110 (Thinly sliced beef with chunky kachumbari) iPlate R195 (South African braai plate: beef chuck/lamb chop, chicken wing & boerewors) Lamb

The world’s longest zipline is coming to the Cape!

The world’s longest zipline is coming to the Cape!

After years of planning, and a delay due to that pesky pandemic, the world’s longest zipline is finally getting ready to open near Cape Town. Set amid the wheatfields of the Overberg near the farming town of Caledon, just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town, the K3 SA Forest Adventures Caledon zipline will see adventurous types flying along a three-kilometre cable, whizzing from a mountain summit to the lower landing stage alongside the N2 freeway! With the ride topping out at precisely 3.2-kilometres, K3 will comfortably beat out the current holder of the ‘world’s longest’ title. That is held by the Jais Flight in the Arabian emirate of Ras al Khaimah, currently the longest zipline in the world stretching to a mere 2.83-kilometres. For Clinton Lerm, owner of SA Forest Adventures – which operates four other ziplines across the Cape – and the man behind the K3, it’s the final steps in a long process. ‘I spent two years searching for suitable sites all over South Africa. The location had to be both logistically practical and easily accessible,’ explains Lerm. ‘One day, I drove past the mountain from where the [K3] zipline starts and saw towers on top, indicating that a road had already been built to the summit. ‘I later rode up the mountain with a farmer and immediately knew this was the perfect spot for the world's longest zipline. But I had to do thorough calculations and consider factors like wind direction - it's not just about spanning a cable for ziplining,’ adds Lerm. Lo

Mama's brings the cool to Kloof Street

Mama's brings the cool to Kloof Street

If you know, you know, right? And for those in the know, Mamacita's in the East City dishes up some of the best tex-mex in town, with their tasty tacos and burritos always best washed down with their signature margaritas. And now owner Toni Tusio – on Instagram as @thetattedmum – has taken those colourful characterful Los Angeles street vibes to Kloof Street, opening Mama’s Margaritaville at the foot of one of the coolest streets in Cape Town. ‘Mama’s Margaritaville is a sister store to Mamacita’s,’ says Tusio. ‘We serve some of Mama’s famous birria tacos and burritos, but we also have some new flavours like the chicken ranch nachos and tacos!’  The food menu is wide-ranging, channelling the ‘Cali-Mex’ approach that made the original so popular. Alongside the nachos, tacos and burritos you’d expect, there are a few gems on offer too. Check out their ‘Texas Twinkies’ – bacon-wrapped jalapeños in BBQ sauce stuffed with pulled beef – and deep-fried pickles, but the menu also runs to some original salads and an impressive Cuban-style sandwich. To drink? Of course, the margaritas that made Mamacita’s famous – we rate it one of the best margaritas in Cape Town – make a star turn at Mama’s Margaritaville too. There are five signature margaritas at the bar, but you’ll also find an impressive range of polomas, daquiris and mojitos on the menu too. It’s certainly not hard to find Mama’s Margaritaville. Like moths to a flame, it draws in foodies and cocktail fans with an explosion of ne

Discover Elgin at the Winter Wine Festival

Discover Elgin at the Winter Wine Festival

Set on the outskirts of the sleepy town of Grabouw, the Elgin Railway Market is housed in what was once an old apple warehouse. Today it’s been reimagined into a bustling Steampunk-styled lifestyle market with an abundance of local food and craft vendors showcasing the best the valley has to offer.  It’s popular every weekend, but from June 15-16 the Market is going to have an extra vibe as the Elgin Winter Wine Festival sets up to showcase the cool climate wines from the valley’s award-winning producers. From Pinot Noir to Chardonnay to Sauvignon Blanc, look forward to tasting wines from the likes of Paul Cluver, Oak Valley, Highlands Road and Iona in one of the most charming settings in the Winelands. Did you know that the original market building was built in the 1940s by Italian prisoners of war? Look up to admire the Art Deco detailing; a gentle reminder of the talented men who created a remarkable space still enjoyed today. Tickets (book via Webtickets) to the Elgin Winter Wine Festival cost R200 per person, which includes 12 tastings and a free tasting glass. Want to arrive in style? The ever-popular Ceres Rail Company steam train service will be running on June 15, taking visitors from the platform in the Cape Town harbour precinct to Elgin and back. This Winelands favourite has marked 40 years in business with beautiful new hotel suites!

Cape Town's La Colombe cracks World's 50 Best Restaurants list

Cape Town's La Colombe cracks World's 50 Best Restaurants list

Cape Town restaurant La Colombe has smashed its way onto the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, climbing an impressive 45 places from its 94th ranking in the 2023 awards to clock in at #49 in 2024.  ‘We’re speechless,’ wrote Executive Chef James Gaag on Instagram, after the awards ceremony, which was held at Wynn Las Vegas in the United States on Wednesday, June 5. ‘It’s such an incredible honour for our team’s consistent work and dedication to be recognised at this level. To not only represent the La Colombe team - but, also our home city of Cape Town - on this stage is an immense privilege. We are so grateful to not only the panel of judges, but to every diner who we have welcomed through our doors - without you, this would not have been possible.’ La Colombe was the only restaurant in Africa to crack the top 50, and the ranking also means it claims the crown as the Best Restaurant in Africa for 2024. In May Cape Town restaurant FYN also made a splash, rising 15 places to bag 60th spot on the list. Praising La Colombe’s food and views, the judges of the World’s 50 Best hailed the ‘elegant dishes grounded in French technique and accented with Asian flourishes’, describing the multi-course menu as being ‘executed with impeccable precision, yet the experience remains playful and approachable’. ‘Team La Colombe have worked incredibly hard to be on this hugely important list,’ explained Tamsin Snyman, the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy Chair for South and East Africa,

Winelands favourite marks 40 years with new suites

Winelands favourite marks 40 years with new suites

Ask a local where to find the best views in Franschhoek, and chances are the answer will be the terrace and gardens at La Petite Ferme. Perched on the mountain flanks above this picturesque Winelands town, La Petite Ferme – ‘the little farm’ – opened its doors 40 years ago this year, and has weathered the ups and downs of the decades to remain one of the best-loved destinations in the winelands. And this winter there’s a new reason to visit, with the newly opened Winery Suites offering a contemporary bolthole boasting bright and colourful dĂ©cor combined with a nod to the Cape vernacular architecture of what was once the farm’s original wine cellar.  The farm’s heritage is reflected in the name of each new suite, from The Viognier Suite – a cultivar the farm is especially known for – to The Variation Suite named for the estate’s signature Rhône-style blend. While the history is celebrated, the new suites are thoroughly modern, from the bold wallpaper framing the king-size beds to the steel sliding screens that separate the bathroom area from the bedroom. Each suite features an inclusive mini-bar, with a private balcony for you to sip the farm’s Sauvignon Blanc as you soak up the valley views. The five suites also overlook a brand-new shared swimming pool available for guests. Aside from the new Winery Suites, La Petite Ferme’s luxury accommodation also includes five Manor House Suites, sharing their own swimming pool, and five luxury Vineyard Suites, each with a private plung

Namibia wants visas for UK, EU, US travellers

Namibia wants visas for UK, EU, US travellers

In what is set to be a spectacular own-goal for a tourism industry that has been on the rise over the past decade, Namibia is planning to introduce a mandatory visa-on-arrival for passport-holders of 31 countries that were previously on the list of visa-exempt nations. In a statement issued in May, the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security announced that citizens of 31 countries would now need to apply for a visa on arrival. These countries include many of Namibia’s most important inbound source markets, the likes of Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and the US. And if you have a passport for Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan? Well, you’re on the list too. Sowing further confusion is the fact that no firm date has been announced for implementation of the new regime. When it comes into force, passport holders from the 31 newly-affected countries will be issued visas on arrival, but will need to make an online visa application and pay a fee. The crux of the matter is the issue of reciprocity when it comes to visas.  According to the statement: “In recent years, the Republic of Namibia has extended gestures of goodwill and favourable treatment to nationals of various countries. However, despite these efforts, certain nations have not reciprocated. In light of these disparities, the government has deemed it necessary to implement a visa requirement to ensure parity and fairness in diplomatic interactions.” It’s

South Africa named the world’s friendliest nation!

South Africa named the world’s friendliest nation!

Well, we always knew it, but now another global survey has confirmed it: South Africa is the world’s friendliest nation! That’s according to new research by payments gateway Remitly, which polled 3000 people from 27 countries around the world on the ‘agreeableness’ trait of the Big 5 Personality Test, a globally recognised and standardised personality test. You can read their research methodology here, but essentially they asked travellers to vote on a 40-point scale of ‘agreeableness’, ranking the results to calculate an average 'friendliness' score for each nation. Topping the Remitly list of the world’s friendliest nations is South Africa, which scored an impressive 34.63 out of 40. And we couldn’t agree more: it’s a place where strangers will smile at you in the street, and you’ll never be short of an impromptu bit of chit-chat while waiting in a queue. Need help with directions? Locals will be only too happy to help, in any one of our 11 official languages. Greece came in second place, scoring 33.71, while Croatia snuck into third with 33.5 out of 40. Mexico and – perhaps surprisingly – Sweden rounded out the top five. Cape Town International has ranked amongst the world's best airports!

FYN wins big on World’s 50 Best list

Acclaimed Cape Town restaurant FYN has cracked the respected World’s 50 Best Restaurants List Top 100 for the fourth time, rising up the ranks from #75 in 2023 to a respectable #60 this year. In 2023 FYN also walked away with the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award, marking them out as a global leader for sustainability in hospitality. 'I’m so proud of the team and what we’ve accomplished collectively. From our phenomenal suppliers and craftspeople to our network of small-scale farmers, foragers and fermenters, for without all of them FYN wouldn’t be what it is!’ said chef-patron Peter Tempelhoff, who also operates Ramenhead and Sushiya at the Time Out Market Cape Town. ‘This recognition is for all of us; it is for the team as much as it is for me. We’re all absolutely thrilled to have made the list for the fourth time and grateful to 50 Best for once again recognising all we do.’ Since opening in 2018 FYN has dominated Cape Town’s culinary landscape with a curated kaiseki menu that merges South African and Japanese culinary traditions and ingredients to create an utterly unique dining experience. Set in a striking loft-style space in the heart of the city, and with each course plated on bespoke crockery, it’s a visual feast that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. The full dinner menu experience at FYN currently costs R1975 per person, or $107, with shortened (and cheaper)

A seafood feast at GALJOEN

A seafood feast at GALJOEN

Set in Cape Town's vibrant 'East City', GALJOEN is the creation of restaurateurs Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn, who are also behind the much-loved Belly of the Beast just up the road. At GALJOEN, working with head chef Isca Stoltz, they serve up some of Cape Town's most inventive seafood, tapping into local boats and aquaculture projects to ensure a serious serving of sustainability too. 'At GALJOEN, we're passionate about showcasing the incredible diversity of South African seafood and use the opportunity to also highlight the critical importance of responsible dining practices,' explains Horn. In a nutshell that means if it's not from South African shores, and from ethical sources, you simply won't find it on the menu at GALJOEN. And as winter tightens its grip, GALJOEN is encouraging diners to head out into the storms with the temptation of a multi-course winter lunch menu priced at an extremely tasty R550 per person. With Stoltz leading the kitchen, look forward to an ever-changing menu that takes its cue from whatever's fresh from the sea that day. Our winter lunch menu reflects the changing season and the bounty of the sea. In every dish, our primary emphasis is on the ingredients,' says Stoltz. So it's great to see GALJOEN partnering with local seafood suppliers committed to sustainable fishing. From farmed Saldanha Bay mussels to a variety of fish – there's more to life than kingklip and kabeljou, right? – caught by artisanal fishermen up and down the coast. There is o
