The best Filipino restaurants in Hong Kong

The best Filipino restaurants in Hong Kong

Filipino food is often considered 'underrated' compared to other Asian cuisines, as diners typically opt for Indian, Japanese, Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese dishes. In the past, most Filipino restaurants in Hong Kong were mainly popular among the Filipino community, but a shift has occurred in recent years. Traditional home-cooked dishes have found their way onto more tables, thanks to modern venues showcasing the cuisine and an increasing number of Filipino chefs making their mark in the city's dining industry. There is also a growing interest in Filipino dining customs, such as the 'boodle fight,' also known as the 'kamayan' feast, where spreads of delicacies on banana leaves are enjoyed by hand.  It's the Philippine Independence Day today, a national holiday in the Philippines observed annually on June 12, commemorating the declaration of Philippines' independence from Spain in 1898. As the Filipino diaspora continues to expand, there are plenty of celebrations worldwide, including in Hong Kong. If you haven’t tried Filipino cuisine, now is the best time to dig into aromatic adobo, sour sinigang, crispy pata, or sizzling sisig. Join the celebrations with a traditional Filipino feast at these local restaurants. Tara, kain tayo! RECOMMENDED: Check out the best Southeast Asian restaurants in Hong Kong

The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

The best speakeasy-style and hidden bars in Hong Kong

No one has actually been to a speakeasy, well, unless you're 100 years old and have lived through Prohibition in the 1920s and early 1930s, that is. What we call 'speakeasies' in Hong Kong are themed bars inspired by the vestiges of the Prohibition era, bars that are intentionally hidden from plain sight, lacks signage, discreetly located in obscured entrances, and showcasing cocktails and experiences designed to look like you're going back in time.  Discovering these bars is already part of the drinking experience, and drinking at these 'hidden' gems can be a magical encounter. And while locating these 'secret' bars is not a daunting task, finding the very best is entirely a different matter. Read on to discover Hong Kong's best-disguised drinking holes and bars-within-bars that serve quality drinks that will keep you coming back for seconds. Check out our quick roundup of these venues in the reel below! Argo

Argo

Argo is Four Seasons Hotel's multi-awarded bar, started by its former beverage manager and Time Out's 2020 Bartender of the Year, Lorenzo Antinori. The bar docked in Hong Kong in 2021 to challenge the way we think about drinks. As part of the second phase of the hotel's renovation, it replaced the former Blue Bar located in the hotel's lobby.  Compared to Caprice bar, located on the sixth floor of the hotel, which has a more formal setting and focuses on wines and cocktails with seasonal ingredients, Argo is more relaxed, highlights innovative spirits, and offers a conceptual cocktail programme.  Their inaugural cocktail menu, 'Here Today, Gone Tomorrow,' – Time Out's Best Cocktail Programme winner in 2021 – celebrates six staple ingredients – coffee, honey, rice, cacao, vanilla, and apples – that face an uncertain future because of climate change or the way it is cultivated. Replacing this menu in 2022, the bar launched the second volume of its cocktail menu, Cook Book, inspired by Hong Kong's culinary traditions. The menu features 12 new cocktails using soybean, apricot kernel, XO sauce, vegan char siu, black vinegar, and aged tea.  Spirit aficionados can explore unique liquors – available in 50ml shots, tasting flights, or as a classic cocktail – with the help of the bar's spirit bible, 'Field Guide to the World's Innovative Spirits', that highlights each bottle's unique story and origin. Interesting bottlings include the world's first AI-created gin Monker's Garkel, lab-m

A.P.E (A Perfect Escape)

A.P.E (A Perfect Escape)

Brainchild of the same people behind Tiffany’s New York Bar, A.P.E’s collection focuses on limited-quantity whiskies. Simply push through the frosted glass door at the back of Esc Coffee to find an intimate, industrial-chic whisky den. Their menu features over 30 types of Scotch which can be enjoyed in tasting flights or drams. But we’d recommend turning your attention to offerings from Independent Bottlers like Douglas Laing and Asta Morris, or Original Bottling from Ardbeg, Clynelish, Lagavulin, Bruichladdich, and Auchentoshan distilleries. Review (March 2023): A.P.E (A Perfect Escape) is a small hidden whisky bar tucked inside Esc coffeeshop in Tin Hau. The venue is brought to you by the same people behind InterContinental Grand Stanford's 1920s-style Tiffany's New York Bar. But compared to Tiffany's posh and classic gentleman's bar interior, A.P.E is more relaxed with a raw industrial design made for the younger crowd. The menu features over 30 bottles of Scotch from Speyside, Highland, Islay, and Lowland regions which can be tasted in three flight selections or as 30ml single drams (from $80 to $520, depending on the bottle). You can find whiskies from Independent Bottlers Douglas Laing, Thompson Bros, Elixir Distillers, and Asta Morris, among others, as well as Original Bottlings from Ardbeg, Clynelish, Lagavulin, Bruichladdich, and Auchentoshan distilleries. Those who want to drink cocktails can also choose from six classic whisky cocktails, including highball, Old Fas

The bar incorporates modern techniques into classic cocktails, using ingredients and spirits from across the Asia Pacific, as well as utilising upcycled ingredients sourced from neighbouring restaurants. Sip on well-crafted drinks infused with flavours from India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Hong Kong, and more, and discover new and unique ingredients that may be unfamiliar to you.  Start with the refreshing and easy-to-drink Cumin (India) ($120), made with yoghurt-washed Stranger & Sons gin and flavours of cumin, cucumber, and guava, before moving on to the Hong Kong-inspired drink, Sesame ($120), made with rhubarb-infused NIP Gin with jasmine tea flavours and salted plum, garnished with sesame crackers. It's one of Central's most inviting hotspots, thanks to its convivial and lively atmosphere. A significant part of its charm comes from the cheerful bar staff, who instantly brighten your arrival with welcoming smiles and greetings as soon as you enter the door. Conceived by the award-winning duo Agung and Laura Prabowo, the creatives behind Penicillin and Dead &. At Lockdown, they blend nostalgia with novelty, celebrating the resilience of Hong Kong's cocktail scene during the pandemic's challenging lockdown period. The intimate venue accommodates 30 patrons in a setting that combines Prohibition-era elegance with modern Asian flair, accentuated by terrarium-style seating and a unique rotating bar station designed by Agung.  The extensive cocktail menu employs innovative techniques to recreate timeless classics. Guests can enjoy signature drinks like the floral Left Bank, the milk punch-style Silk Stocking Cocktail, and a deconstructed Clover Club. For the adventurous, there are off-menu treasures such as the Guava Negroni and Dirty Martini. The bar also delights aficionados with vintage cocktails crafted from antique and rare spirits, includ

Click below to check out their offerings:  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Hong Kong (@timeouthk) Despite the challenges of Hong Kong’s competitive dining scene, determined chefs continue to open new venues that sate the unwavering appetite of the city’s food lovers. Chefs like Gavin Chin exemplify the drive and courage to embrace the challenge of our city’s  ever-changing culinary landscape. Patrons may know this young chef from the neighbourhood French wine-bar Brut! His new restaurant, House of Culture, which has been almost a year in the making, is finally serving patrons in Sai Ying Pun, a good five minutes walk from his former kitchen. Despite being inconspicuously tucked among bamboo scaffolding, the space’s impression of unfinished construction does not deter patrons, as evidenced by occupied tables on a Saturday night.  The term ‘house of culture’ implies a space that highlights diverse cultural expressions. As you walk into the restaurant, the word ‘Culture’ debossed on the wall serves to reinforce this concept. If you are unaware of chef Gavin's Australian roots and his culinary experiences, it is hard to find the anchor of the concept just based on the restaurant’s interior – it’s not immediately apparent what culinary adventure awaits. The muted apricot and salmon colour palette may remind you of a Saharan desert-inspired setting. But, upon closer inspection, the textured wall with flickering light blue lights resembling wa

Not only does he sport vibrant and ever-changing hair, ranging from pink to blue, but he also takes a creative approach to his culinary creations. Seamlessly blending Western ingredients and techniques with traditional Japanese cooking, he offers diners a sushi experience that is both playful and exciting. To experience the full range of Sushiyoshi's offerings, opt for the omakase, which features 17 to 21 courses. In 2023, chef Hiroki permanently relocated to Hong Kong, and his latest creation, the hairy crab omakase menu, is an absolute must-try this season. ViuTV presents Hong Kong’s first cocktail competition show Master Mixologist

Hong Kong consistently earns top spots on Asia’s and the world’s prestigious lists for its excellent bars. But how much do we really know about our local bartenders and the talents behind Hong Kong’s world of mixology? We’ve seen various reality TV shows about chefs, but until Netflix’s Drink Masters debuted in 2022, bartending competitions were mostly seen only within the industry. Bartenders would compete in national competitions for Diageo’s World Class and Bacardi Legacy before moving on to regional and global stages. Now, Hong Kong TV channel ViuTV aims to educate local audiences and shine a spotlight on the city’s talented bartenders with its newly launched reality show, Master Mixologist. Check out the snippet below: The contestants include 32 bartenders, some with professional backgrounds and some who are simply passionate about the craft and eager to try their hand at mixing behind the stick for your nightly enjoyment. These contenders will compete in a one-hour show to showcase their cocktail-making skills, coupled with their talent for storytelling about the drinks they create. Just like other reality shows, there’s sweat, tears, intrigue, and plenty of drama caught on camera. Fans of award-winning bars like Quinary and Coa will recognise familiar faces such as award-winning mixologists Antonio Lai and Jay Khan, who will serve as judges for the TV show. They are joined by whisky and wine columnist Cecilia Wong, who is also the host of ViuTV’s weekly wine and spi

Farewell, Sevva! Hong Kong’s iconic rooftop bar is closing on April 17

Hosting renowned personalities from David Beckham to Pharrell Williams, Sevva has been an unrivalled pioneer of entertainment in Hong Kong since 2008. However, after sixteen glorious years, this style haven, founded by entrepreneur Bonnae Gokson (proprietor of Ms B’s Cakery and C’est La B cafes), will say its final farewell on April 17. Sevva is the epitome of a city hotspot. Occupying 22,000sq ft of space on the 25th floor of the Landmark Prince, its furnishings effortlessly radiate elegance and timeless style, as if they were pulled directly from the pages of a luxury interior design magazine. One of the reasons for its popularity is its remarkable terrace, which is surrounded by a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Central and Admiralty’s iconic skyscrapers, the picturesque harbour, and the mesmerising Kowloon skyline. This makes it a favourite among tourists and locals, as it offers an unforgettable vantage point to admire the city. Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road named second coolest street in the world

Age isn’t always a ticket to street cred, but the 180-year-old Hollywood Road just clinched the title for the second coolest street in the world for 2024, after Melbourne’s High Street which got the top spot. Annually, Time Out releases the list based on local polls combined with the expertise of our local editors. In 2022, Sheung Wan’s cool bohemian street, Tai Ping Shan, ranked seventh in the world, chosen for its unique blend of old and new, food, culture, and pandemic-era community spirit. This year, the streets were chosen for their rich history yet ever-evolving character, and all the cool stuff they offer, including a range of experiences for appreciating art, dining and drinking, and retail offerings.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Hong Kong (@timeouthk) Photograph: Joshua Lin Hollywood Road stood out because it represents exactly what we think makes a street cool: it has a long history but is still constantly changing and offering something new. This 1km stretch from Central to Sheung Wan is like that wise old friend who’s seen it all but still knows how to rock it. One of its main features is how it’s linked to all the other cool streets in Central, like Wyndham Street, Upper Lascar Row, Old Bailey Street, and more. You’ll also never go hungry nor thirsty in the area, with options ranging from Michelin-starred dining, like the highly coveted Tate Dining Room that serves Chinese cuisine with a French twist, to trendy new bar

XX bar reopens in Rosewood Hong Kong

Aside from DarkSide, you can now add Rosewood Hong Kong’s newly reopened bar XX to your next bar-hopping adventure in TST. The bar originally opened in 2019 as Hong Kong’s first-ever ladies-only speakeasy-style bar. Unfortunately, it closed during the pandemic but has since reopened as Maison Le Cercle, a members-only bar in collaboration with Pernod Ricard. The exclusivity of the establishment required guests to have the right connections to secure an invite, before allowing them to savour a curated selection of cocktails and rare spirits.   Photograph: Courtesy XX Starting this month, XX is ditching the exclusive vibes and reopening its doors to everyone. No passwords, no hassle – just walk-ins. Now, folks from all over can kick back in style, surrounded by antique mirrored tables, plush velvet couches, and Hong Kong’s dazzling skyline. Photograph: Courtesy XX For libations, expect an extensive selection of whiskies, fine wines, and seasonal cocktails (starts at $170 per drink) crafted by a talented team of bartenders led by bar manager David Monroy.   Photograph: Courtesy XX XX is located on the fifth floor of Rosewood Hong Kong and is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm to midnight, with hours extending to 1am on weekends. Hong Kong ranks among 50 best cities in 2024

Hong Kong ranks among 50 best cities in 2024

Every year, we ask you, our readers, how you feel about your city, and we compile the survey results to gather insights on food, culture, and nightlife quality, affordability, and locals' overall feelings about their city. This year, Time Out partnered with research company Potentia Insight, and the results are in, with our annual ranking of The Best Cities in the World just released. The sixth annual list for 2024 is composed of 50 cities that offer exceptional visitor experiences and vibrant amenities, while also boasting strong community connections and an undeniable atmosphere, ideal for living. Leading the list this year is the famous ‘city that never sleeps,’ New York, followed by the naturally beautiful Cape Town, and Germany's capital city, Berlin. Tokyo ranks as the top city in Asia at number eight, followed by Mumbai at number 12 and Singapore at the 22nd spot.  Similar to the fifth edition of The Best Cities in the World, our beloved city has once again secured the second-last position on the list. Although it feels like a distant memory, Hong Kong was one of the last cities to open its doors to the world due to the pandemic. Navigating through the challenges of the past years has left us, Hongkongers, feeling a bit weary, but there's still so much to cherish about our city. This year, the city is thriving, presenting the perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the uniqueness it has to offer. With a plethora of top attractions, a dynamic art scene, and lively r

Hong Kong ranks second to last among 53 best cities in the world for 2022

Remember the Time Out Index survey we rolled out earlier this year where we asked you how you feel about our city? The results are in, and Time Out's annual ranking of the world's best cities has been revealed.  This list was put together based on the Time Out Index survey results, where 20,000 city dwellers from all over the world answered questions about life in their hometown, including the current state of the restaurant, bar, and art scene. The ranking highlights cities that are reopening and things to look forward to as people return to travel.  This year, 53 cities made it on the list, with Edinburgh nabbing the top spot, followed by Chicago – which took the title of the funnest city in the world (according to locals) – and Medellín taking the third place. Mumbai takes the highest spot in Asia at 14th place, followed by Taipei at number 16.  Last year Hong Kong was in the top 20, but with everything that the city went through during the fifth wave of the pandemic, Hong Kong fell to second last among the ranked cities, sitting at 52 just below Bangkok, and inching above Doha which is ranked last at 53.   Photograph: TA Hong Kong has been hit hard by the pandemic in the early part of the year, and even after the city opened up to non-residents after two years of closing the borders, flight cancellations and quarantine requirements have posed hurdles. When we rolled out the survey in March, 37 percent of Hongkongers said there was not much to do in the city. Most of th
